Miss Education Ep 1: DORMITORIES
UTOPIA.SG was co-founded by several peers and myself during the first COVID-19 lockdown in Singapore. It was initially spurred by the outbreak of COVID-19 cases in the migrant workers dormitories, which led us to first organise a crowdfund campaign to raise funds for advocacy groups that were providing aid to the migrant workers community.
Besides raising funds for aid, the outbreak in the dormitories also compelled us to investigate the previously-unquestioned business of migrant worker dormitories in Singapore. This led to the first Miss Education video by UTOPIA.SG, in which local comedian Preetipls presented insights and perspectives of migrant workers dormitories in Singapore, including the network of players in the dormitory business as well as some issues that had previously been overlooked.
My primary role in UTOPIA.SG was to research on the topics of concern and write the main body of the script, ensuring that the flow of content would be critical and coherent in the understanding of the issues. This included thorough secondary research, long-hours of discourses with fellow teammates, writing and fact-checking.
Being involved in this project was not only fulfilling because of the overwhelming response we received, but also because I learnt a lot about the invisible forces that exist in this society I live in. It fuelled me to continue standing up for what I believe in and hopefully contribute towards creating a society that I want to live in.
